Title VIII Research Fellowships

Title VIII provides grants for independent, policy-relevant research abroad in the humanities and social sciences as well as language training.

With funds from the US Department of State, Title VIII provides grants for independent, policy-relevant research abroad in the humanities and social sciences as well as language training. In recent years, American Councils scholars have conducted independent research in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

The Title VIII Research Scholar Program provides full support for graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars seeking to conduct in-country, independent research for three to nine consecutive months in Eurasia and Eastern Europe.

Fellowships include international airfare; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support, and up to 10 academic hours per week of individualized language instruction. All grants are merit-based and open to US graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty. Applicants must be US citizens.
